To Squarespace and back again

It sure has been a while… I’ve taken a jaunt into the Squarespace world as some of you may have know for the past 2 months, but now I’m back. Back to WordPress. Sqaurespace is an amazing product, I just couldn’t get the flexibilty and features out of it that I needed to take the site to a new level – yet even match the current version of WordPress. So, I’ve come back to Wordpess (happily) and now am enjoying the virtues of the recently released Blackberry App for WordPress. I’ve been waiting for this app for a while. Let the games begin.

Redoubt eruption photos

As you may have heard… Redoubt volcano has been erupting like made lately…

Most days have been obscured from photos by clouds, but there were some stellar pics taken from overflights and viewpoints yesterday.  Let me just say that it is AMAZING to live in a place with such an awesome geologic force going on right now! I am seriously thinking about a drive to Clam Gulch or Kenai tomorrow to take some photos of my own.  Until then – enjoy this shot (from the AVO) and even more from the AVO.

White House blog

After President Barak Obama’s inauguration I caught word of the new White House website, featuring a blog.

This to me is extremely welcome news about the new era of U.S. government that started today.

This is an exciting change that speaks to an open and transparent government (something we haven’t seen in quite a while). Finally a President that understands technology and its modern benefits (as Obama did all throughout his campaign).

Google Apps to be available offline

Today Google announced that they will start rolling out offline access to Google Apps (Docs, Gmail, Calendar, and Talk) and Google Docs using Google Gears. Users no longer will have to be connected to the internet to access their Google Apps and online data. This integration will be rolled out over the following weeks.

Google Gears is a Firefox plugin for Mac OS X (Safari support coming), Linux, and Windows (IE also supported) that allows users to navigate to their regular Google Apps url’s as you would online, but but be able to access them offline just like you would normally, with the data syncing up when you reconnect later.

To me this is another logical yet significant step in making your online information accessible to you anywhere, anytime, and that is true connectivity and mobility at it’s finest. Good job Google, keep it up!

P.S. If you haven’t checked out Google Apps yet, you are missing out! iSKUB mail, docs, and calender all run on it! Did I mention it is FREE?

Introducing iSKUB live

iSKUB live; a new feature on iSKUB launching today!

Powered by Qik, iSKUB live will deliver LIVE streaming video onto iSKUB.com from anywhere that I have my Nokia S60 handset has internet connectivity, which in my case is my trusty Nokia E51.

Whenever you go to iskub.com/live you can see what I am streaming LIVE real-time or the last video recorded when I was online.

Services like Qik offer a fantastic way to bring internet content production from a write-publish-read system to a live-immediate system. Just go to the site, and it is there. Nothing gets easier than that. So check out iSKUB live and let me know what you think. It also has it’s own comments section for viewer feedback. Post those comments!

I will be doing some cool new stuff this year, hopefully with some video content and continued posts about social issues and injustices, etc. As well continuing the other content you have come to expect here on iSKUB.

Until then… keep it swass.

Happy Holidays from a Galaxy far far away

This is just so horrible that it had to be shared… An remixed version of the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special where Han has to get Chewbacca back to his family for “Life Day”. This is hilariously awful… enjoy.

An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything

This is a great story. A theoretical physicist by the name of Garrett Lisi (University of California, 1999) who has no university affiliation has written a paper titled “An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything”. Now many news stations are reporting this story with Lisi being a “surfer dude” who defies established physics and comes up with a radical new theory (in a way discrediting his doctoral degree). I’ve read the articles, and read Lisi’s paper, available here in PDF, and it wasn’t written by some backwater “surfer dude”. I like to support non-mainstream advances in science, and think that Lisi’s paper, correct or not, should we viewed as a fresh, innovative idea with fascinating implications (re: Albert Einstein). Physics in particular is a rather rigid field. Newcomers are not usually well received. This paper in turn, tries to tackle the most difficult of subjects, the theory of everything. No question is more fundamental than “why does the universe exist?”. Lisi’s paper is a fresh take on the theory of everything, but it’s fit into an old model, a mathematical model of a geometric structure which appears commonly nature (an E8 principle bundle). The paper is very fascinating and develops a truly beautiful possibility for a unified theory of everything. If your up for some deep, scientific, mind expanding reading, check out Lisi’s An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything.

Jaiku acquired by Google

Details are slim at this point, but Jaiku has been acquired by Google. A nice FAQ page has been setup by the folks over at Jaiku regarding existing users and the acquisition. Looks like they’re freezing there user-base for the time being (mostly). Let’s hope Google has some big plans for Jaiku. They could do great things with it.

USS Torrent shipwreck found in Alaska

Hot of the Alaska news presses is the finding of the USS Torrent. Alaska’s oldest U.S. shipwreck, that sank in 1868. This is a pretty big archaeological find for sure. Probably the biggest shipwreck find ever in Alaska. A quote by local shipwreck histortian Steve Llyod “It really is one of a kind,” he said. “It’s pretty, it’s special and it deserves to be recovered and preserved — and eventually exhibited in some context that makes it accessible to the public.”

Burmese monks

Now I don’t know much about Burmese monks or the Burmese government, but 200-300 of them have now been killed for their peaceful protest against steep price hikes by the Burmese brutal military rule. How horrible and saddening is this? Let us weigh-in here. For more on this story check out here, here, and here.
